In a significant step towards strengthening rural livelihoods in the Northeast, the Division of Animal & Fisheries Sciences (DAFS), ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya, successfully concluded a five-day training programme on
"Development of secondary livelihoods for women and unemployed youth through value-added fish product development" from February 16 to 20, 2026. Organised under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) initiative for developing an Aqua-Village in Meghalaya, the training drew 15 participants — 13 women and 2
men — representing three Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from the region. The programme was held at Mawdwar village for the first two days, followed by three days of hands-on sessions at the Fisheries Research Farm, ICAR, Umiam.
The training combined theoretical lectures with extensive practical sessions, covering a range of marketable fish products including fish pickle, prawn pickle, fish cutlet, fish chutney powder, fish fingers, and fish drying techniques. Participants
were also trained in packing, economic appraisal, and marketing strategies to help them transform their skills into sustainable enterprises. At the valedictory function, Dr. B.P. Singh, Head (DTAC) and Nodal Officer, TSP, encouraged participants to embrace value addition in fisheries for a healthy
and prosperous life. Fish processing kits were distributed free of cost to all participants, along with certificates of completion.
The training was organised under the guidance of Dr. S. Ghatak, Head (DAFS) and Director (A) of the institute, and coordinated by Dr. C. Debnath, Senior Scientist (Fisheries Resource Management), with assistance from Mr. P. Mahanta, Technical Officer
and Mr. S. Gojendro Singh, Scientist (SS). Officials noted that this marks the first step towards establishing the Aqua-Village model in Meghalaya, where all scientific components of fisheries will be showcased through active community participation.
